Because We Care - GOTS Organic Cotton vs Cotton

Because We Care - GOTS Organic Cotton vs Cotton

Because we believe in providing the best for our children, we want you to know how committed we are to your little ones too. We've shared on our last blog post (Because We Care - Organic Pyjamas Collection) why and how we chose GOTs Organic cotton for our collection and wanted to share a bit more about our findings so you know exactly what they're sleeping in.

Environmental and Social Responsibility

In particular, GOTS is differentiated by its emphasis on social and environmental responsibilities that are implemented across all stages of the global commodity chain. These environmental and social benefits are then passed onto the PJs that we produce via the high safety standards guaranteed throughout the production process.

Did You Know?

#1 Cotton is the most important non-food agricultural commodity and one of the most widely grown crops in the world.

#2 However, growing cotton is also one of the most chemical-intensive processes, and the lives of farmers in cotton-growing areas are often affected with water and soil pollution, along with subsequent health consequences.

#3 The cultivation of cotton is responsible for the release of USD 2 billion worth of chemical pesticides, which accounts for 16% of global insecticide releases. This equates to almost 1kg of hazardous pesticides applied for every hectare of cotton field.

#4 Hazardous cotton pesticides are now known to contaminate rivers in USA, India, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Brazil, Australia, Greece and West Africa. In Brazil, the world?s 4th largest consumer of agrochemicals, researchers tested rainwater for the presence of pesticides. 19 different chemicals were identified of which 12 were applied to cotton within the study area.

#5 Between 1 and 3% (25 to 77 million) of agricultural workers worldwide suffer from acute pesticide poisoning. Acute symptoms include headaches, vomiting, tremors, lack of coordination, difficulty breathing or respiratory depression, loss of consciousness, seizures and death. In more serious cases, the chronic effects of LT exposure include impaired memory and concentration, disorientation, severe depression and confusion.

#6 A study conducted by researchers at the Technical University of Lodz in Poland, has shown that hazardous pesticides applied during cotton production can also be detected in cotton clothing.
